Going Green

At the PARCS Study, we’re always thinking green. And this year, we’re not alone. Recently, the Pantone Color Institute selected their yellow-green shade, known as Pantone 15-0343, as 2017’s Color of the Year. Pantone first began this tradition in 2000, to gain insight into the psychology behind what makes a specific color so popular at a certain time. To determine the color each year, specialists analyze trends across multiple industries, such as the auto industry, fashion, and interior design. Once they’ve narrowed their results down to one shade, they work to understand the meaning and experience that color brings.

In the case of 2017, their discovery depicts a positive message. In an interview with the New York Times, Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said “this is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature.” She explains that green speaks to four ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, and renew. In other words, the presence of this color can calm and re-energize individuals during times of stress.

Ms. Eiseman also refers to the Japanese concept of ‘forest bathing,’ which states that one of the best things to do for positive mental and physical health is to go for a walk in the forest. While forest access is limited in New York City, our partnership with the NYC Parks department works to increase opportunities to connect with nature and reap the benefits of seeing green. By building improved, accessible outdoor spaces and working directly with community members to learn about their well-being and relationships with their environment, we strive to create a happier, healthier, and greener New York City.
